Daejeon (pronounced “day-juhn” or tɛdʑʌn) is South Korea’s fifth-largest metropolis, with a population of 1.5 million. Located at the heart of the country, the city can be reached from anywhere in the country within 3 hours via road or rail. Daejeon is well known as a hub of technology, research, education, and governance, and also boasts a variety of pleasant green spaces, including rivers, mountains, and parks.
The name Daejeon (대전 大田) means “great field,” referring to the area’s topography as a large river valley encircled by mountains. This name is a Sino-Korean translation of the native Korean name Hanbat (한밭), which can be found in place names such as the Hanbat Arboretum—Korea’s largest manmade urban arboretum, located just across the river from the DH2026 conference venue.
